Use the time on the birth certificate. The nakshatra and lagna depend on birth time and place, so a wrong time can change the porondam result.
Porondam matching is the Sri Lankan way of comparing two horoscopes before marriage. Mainly from each person's birth nakshatra and Moon sign, twenty porondam such as gana, yoni, rajju and nadi are marked good, average or not good.
Each porondam speaks to a different part of married life: temperament, harmony, health, children and longevity. Which porondam match matters more than how many.
Of the twenty, nakshatra, gana, mahendra, stree deergha, yoni, rasi, rasyadhipathi, vashya, rajju and vedha are the dasa porondam (the ten) and carry the most weight. The dasa porondam score in the result is how many of these ten are not marked 'not good'.
The 20 porondam score counts how many of all twenty are good. The Sudarshana Chakra compares the positions of the nine grahas in both charts.
The result is not decided by the porondam count alone. It also weighs the overall guna score, the Sudarshana Chakra, nadi dosha and the bride's kuja (mangala) dosha.
This is an automatic calculation. Before a marriage decision, have both horoscopes checked by an astrologer, who also weighs planet strengths, dasa periods and dosha remedies.

There is no single number. Key porondam such as rajju and nadi, and factors like kuja dosha, weigh more than the count. That is why both full horoscopes should be read.
The nakshatra usually follows the date, but on days when the nakshatra changes, and for the lagna, an accurate time is needed. Treat the result as uncertain if the time is not known.
